The Right Way to Start a Skincare Routine
Why does finding the right skincare routine feel so daunting – am I right? There are so many different brands, methods, and ingredients to choose from. Having worked as a professional MUA for over 15 years, I am here to assure you it doesn’t have to be that complicated. It all comes down to knowing the basic steps so you have a solid foundation in your routine. And from there, it’s simply understanding the ingredients and how they interact with your skin chemistry. So by following a few simple but key steps, you’ll be well on your way to loving your routine. I’m going to break this down and keep it super simple. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Step 1: Cleanse to Begin Fresh
I always say with anything in cosmetics, it’s vital to start with a clean face. Which is why using a quality cleanser is arguably the most important step in your entire skincare routine. Cleansers remove dirt, makeup, oils, and ensure your skin is prepared for the rest of the formulas in your routine.
As a former RN, I’m a sucker for science and safety, which is why I love cosmetic brands that follow European Standards for ingredients. Why, you ask? European Standards are the absolute toughest in the world ensuring effective, quality products.
For an absolute luxurious experience, myself and thousands of my clients use the Bellame Hydrating Cleanser . It gently removes impurities, hydrates, and leaves my skin feeling soft and radiant, all without stripping moisture. Perfect for all skin types, this cleanser ensures your skin is fresh and ready for the rest of your routine. Baobab Oil and potent Hyaluronic Acid deliver long-lasting moisture, while Vitamin C helps to brighten the skin. The patented Soluxomes® technology guarantees the efficient delivery of these active ingredients, leaving the skin feeling clean, hydrated, and glowing.
Step 2: Exfoliate for Smooth, Refreshed Skin
The next very important step in our routine is exfoliating the skin. But let me be clear! You don’t want to over exfoliate and do it daily. I recommend 2 maybe 3 times per week. It’s a key step because exfoliating removes those pesky dead skin cells. And it promotes a healthy skin turnover. By exfoliating 2-3 times a week, you’ll keep your skin smooth, clear, and ready to take in the rest of your products.
Our Hybrid Exfoliant combines natural ingredients and advanced science to reveal a glowing complexion. Enzymes from papaya and pineapple work on a molecular level to exfoliate, while bamboo and coconut powders gently buff the skin for a smooth finish. Enriched with hyaluronic acid, vitamins C, E, and niacinamide, this formula nourishes deeply, supports cell regeneration, and promotes an even skin tone. Bellame Exfoliating Scrub
Step 3: Tone to Balance and Hydrate
Now we want to tone. Toners help restore your skin’s natural pH balance, hydrate, and prepare your skin to absorb serums and moisturizers more effectively. For oily skin, toners like Bellame’s Charcoal 3-in-1 Toner are ideal. It combines witch hazel to tighten pores, while charcoal powder purifies and detoxifies.
This alcohol-free formula also features glycolic and salicylic acid, which gently exfoliate, helping to clear the skin and improve texture. Infused with eucalyptus and menthol, it provides a refreshing, cooling sensation. Additionally, baobab oil and kelp extract hydrate and nourish, leaving your skin balanced, calm, and revitalized.

Step 4: Treat Specific Skin Concerns with a Serum
Serums are highly concentrated formulas designed to target specific skin concerns. Whether you’re dealing with dark spots, fine lines, or dullness, serums can help address those issues more effectively than moisturizers alone. Apply serums after toning to give them the best chance to penetrate and work their magic.
- For brightening: Look for serums with Vitamin C.
- For anti-aging: Opt for serums that contain peptides or retinol.

Step 5: Moisturize for Soft, Hydrated Skin
Moisturizing is essential for keeping your skin hydrated and preventing dryness. Even if you have oily skin, don’t skip this step. A moisturizer helps lock in hydration and prevents your skin from overproducing oil.
- Oily skin: Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer.
- Dry skin: Go for a richer, cream-based moisturizer that includes ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Step 6: Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen
Don’t forget the sunscreen! Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays prevents premature aging. It even helps you mitigate dark spots, and drastically lowers your chances of developing skin cancer. Apply sunscreen every morning, regardless of the weather. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to ensure you’re getting the proper protection.
