Nutrients for Glowing Skin: The Best Foods to Include in Your Diet

A cup of coffee, a fresh orange with its peel, and Bellame skincare products arranged on a clean surface, representing the connection between food and skincare for a glowing complexion.

Importance of Good Nutrition for Skin Health

Did you know that food and skincare go hand in hand? We all know that quality, safe skincare works wonders on our complexion, but what you put inside your body has just as big of an impact if not more than what you put directly on it. Your diet affects the health of your skin, and certain nutrients are essential for promoting a radiant, glowing complexion. As a makeup artist and wellness enthusiast, I’ve seen the effects of prioritizing our health and what it can do for the skin. Today, I’m going to teach you which nutrients you should be including in your food to give your skin the care and natural glow you’ve been craving.

Vitamin C: The Diet and Beauty Glow Booster

The first nutrient I want to discuss is Vitamin C because your skin absolutely loves this magical vitamin. Our skin is made up of the most abundant protein in the body known as collagen, and Vitamin C plays a huge role in the production of collagen which is needed to maintain skin elasticity and prevent wrinkles. Plus, it helps protect your skin from pollution in the environment and UV rays, which leads to premature aging.

Good Sources of Vitamin C:

  • Oranges & Citrus Fruits
  • Strawberries
  • Beef Liver (one of nature’s super foods)
  • Red Bell peppers
  • Salmon Roe aka Fish Eggs

Pro Tip: Beef Liver is definitely an acquired taste. If ya know ya know – haha. If you buy your beef from a farmer or butcher, simply have it mixed in with your ground beef and you’ll never notice any difference! You’ll never even know it’s in there. Another option is to freeze tiny bites of liver about the size of a blueberry and swallow it whole. It’s so nutrient dense, it’s worth it.

Why It Works: Vitamin C brightens the skin and reduces dark spots. Ultimately giving your complexion a fresh, youthful glow. It’s also known that incorporating vitamin C-rich foods into your diet helps to reduce dreaded inflammation, leading to healthier skin.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The Hydration Hero

Omega-3 fatty acids are incredible for soft, hydrated skin. These healthy fats are known to help lock in moisture, reduce inflammation, and protect the skin’s barrier from damage. When your skin is properly hydrated, it feels smooth, looks plump, and glows like the sun.

Skin-friendly Omega Rich Foods:

  • Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel
  • Walnuts
  • Grass Fed & Finished Beef
  • Egg Yolks
  • Chia Seeds
  • Flaxseeds

Why It Works: Omega-3s help to keep the skin’s moisture levels in check and reduce the appearance of dryness and flakiness. They also help reduce redness and irritation, which is perfect if you struggle with sensitive skin.

Vitamin E: The Antioxidant Protector

Vitamin E is an amazing nutrient to work into your diet and indirectly improve your beauty routine. It’s a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects your skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage. This vitamin helps nourish your skin and may even improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

Skin-friendly Vit E Rich Foods:

  • Almonds
  • Spinach
  • Avocados
  • Sunflower seeds

Why It Works: Vitamin E helps repair and protect your skin from the damage caused by sun exposure and pollution. It also helps maintain your skin’s moisture levels, keeping it hydrated and smooth.

Zinc: The Acne Fighter

Zinc is an incredible nutrient to work into your diet & foods to better help your skin health. It’s essential for the healing and regeneration of your skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with acne, breakouts, and other skin conditions like eczema. If you’re dealing with frequent breakouts or irritated skin, zinc can help keep your skin calm and clear.

Skin-friendly Zinc Rich Foods:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Cashews
  • Chickpeas
  • Oysters

Why It Works: Zinc helps regulate oil production in the skin, making it a great nutrient for acne-prone skin. It also promotes wound healing, which can be helpful for minimizing scarring from past breakouts.

Collagen: The Skin Firming Protein

Collagen is the protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. And unfortunately, the older we get, our natural collagen production declines. But don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to boost collagen in your diet!

Skin-friendly Collagen Rich Foods:

  • Bone broth
  • Chicken skin
  • Egg whites
  • Berries

Why It Works: Consuming collagen-rich foods helps your body produce more collagen, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also keeps your skin firm, smooth, and plump, giving you that youthful glow.

Biotin: Ultimate Skin and Beauty Nutrition

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is an important nutrient for maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails. It’s especially important for those who want to improve the overall health and texture of their skin. Biotin helps stimulate collagen production and improves skin elasticity.

Skin-friendly Biotin Rich Foods:

  • Eggs
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Almonds
  • Spinach

Why It Works: Biotin improves the strength of your skin, hair, and nails by supporting collagen and keratin production. A biotin-rich diet can help your skin stay smooth and prevent dryness and flakiness.
